Convert a NatWest statement PDF to Excel or CSV
Drop the NatWest statement PDF below. Brought Forward reads it on your computer, checks every row against the running balance, and downloads a CSV for Excel or a file for Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, OFX or QIF. Nothing is uploaded.
Tested on real statements. A NatWest online “Transactions” download and three published NatWest statements, read with every amount and balance matching.
Getting the PDF from NatWest
In NatWest online banking, open the account and choose Statements to download a PDF statement. The “Transactions” page also downloads as a PDF, which Brought Forward reads too. Save it somewhere you can find it, then drop it into the box above or choose it with the button.
How Brought Forward reads a NatWest statement
- NatWest statements print the date once per day, without the year (“05 MAY”). The year comes from the statement period.
- Descriptions run over two or three lines with the amount on the last line, and are joined back together.
- The “BROUGHT FORWARD” line at the top of each page is checked against the rows before it.
- The online “Transactions” download has a Type column (Direct Debit, Automated Credit and so on), kept as its own column. It has no balance column, so those rows can’t be checked; Brought Forward says so rather than pretending.
Into your accounts
- Xero: download the Xero CSV (or OFX) and import it as a bank statement.
- QuickBooks: download the QuickBooks CSV and upload it from Banking.
- FreeAgent: download the FreeAgent CSV and upload it as a statement.
- Excel: the CSV opens directly, with money in, money out, balance and the check result in columns.
Questions
- Why are rows from the NatWest transactions download “not checked”?
- That download has no running balance, so there is nothing to check rows against. Compare the totals with your banking app. Monthly statements do have balances, and every row is checked.
- Is my NatWest statement uploaded anywhere?
- No. It’s read by your browser on your computer. The page is allowed to talk only to the licence server and a cookie-free page counter, and neither receives anything from your statement.
- What if a row doesn’t agree with the balance?
- It’s flagged in red with a cross, and marked in the CSV. Check it against the PDF: usually a page is missing from the file or a figure was misread. The report button tells us the bank (and nothing else) so the layout can be fixed.
- How much does it cost?
- Three statements a day are free. Pro is £8 a month or £69 a year for as many as you like.
