Convert a Barclays statement PDF to Excel or CSV
Drop the Barclays statement PDF below. Brought Forward reads it on your computer, checks every row against the running balance, and downloads a CSV for Excel or a file for Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, OFX or QIF. Nothing is uploaded.
Online-banking transaction printouts tested on real published ones; the formal monthly statement built from its published layout. Two real Barclays printouts read with every balance agreeing. The monthly PDF statement layout is tested on generated statements only so far: the balance check tells you at once if yours didn’t read cleanly.
Getting the PDF from Barclays
In Barclays online banking or the app, open the account and look for Statements. Download the statement PDF. A printed transaction list saved as PDF works too. Save it somewhere you can find it, then drop it into the box above or choose it with the button.
How Brought Forward reads a Barclays statement
- Barclays printouts list the newest transaction first. They’re put back into date order, oldest first, for importing.
- The description is split around the amount (a payment type line above, a reference below). Those lines are joined into one description.
- Money out is shown with a minus sign and money in without. Both become signed amounts, and Money in / Money out columns in the CSV.
- Monthly statements show the date once per day and open with a start balance, which is where checking begins.
Into your accounts
- Xero: download the Xero CSV (or OFX) and import it as a bank statement.
- QuickBooks: download the QuickBooks CSV and upload it from Banking.
- FreeAgent: download the FreeAgent CSV and upload it as a statement.
- Excel: the CSV opens directly, with money in, money out, balance and the check result in columns.
Questions
- Barclays lets me export a CSV. Do I need this?
- If the transaction export covers the dates you need, use it. The PDF statement is the official record and covers older months, and Brought Forward checks every row of it against the balance.
- Is my Barclays statement uploaded anywhere?
- No. It’s read by your browser on your computer. The page is allowed to talk only to the licence server and a cookie-free page counter, and neither receives anything from your statement.
- What if a row doesn’t agree with the balance?
- It’s flagged in red with a cross, and marked in the CSV. Check it against the PDF: usually a page is missing from the file or a figure was misread. The report button tells us the bank (and nothing else) so the layout can be fixed.
- How much does it cost?
- Three statements a day are free. Pro is £8 a month or £69 a year for as many as you like.
