Convert an HSBC statement PDF to Excel or CSV
Drop the HSBC statement PDF below. Brought Forward reads it on your computer, checks every row against the running balance, and downloads a CSV for Excel or a file for Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, OFX or QIF. Nothing is uploaded.
Tested on real published statements. Three HSBC business current and savings statements that councils publish, plus an HSBC online-banking transaction list: every row agreed with the balances.
Getting the PDF from HSBC
In HSBC online banking, open the account and find its statements (older ones are PDF only). Download each month you need as a PDF. Save it somewhere you can find it, then drop it into the box above or choose it with the button.
How Brought Forward reads an HSBC statement
- The date is printed only on the first transaction of each day; later rows that day take the same date.
- Payment type codes (DD, BP, CR, VIS, SO, ))) and so on) sit before the details. They go into their own Type column, so the description stays clean.
- Details often wrap onto two or three lines, with the amount on the last one. The lines are joined back into one description.
- HSBC prints the balance only at the end of each day, so each day’s transactions are checked together against that balance.
- “BALANCE CARRIED FORWARD” at the foot of each page and “BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD” at the top of the next are checked too, which catches a page missing from the PDF.
Into your accounts
- Xero: download the Xero CSV (or OFX) and import it as a bank statement.
- QuickBooks: download the QuickBooks CSV and upload it from Banking.
- FreeAgent: download the FreeAgent CSV and upload it as a statement.
- Excel: the CSV opens directly, with money in, money out, balance and the check result in columns.
Questions
- Can’t I just download a CSV from HSBC?
- For recent transactions, online banking can usually export a spreadsheet file. Statements themselves, and older months, come as PDFs, which is where a converter helps.
- Is my HSBC statement uploaded anywhere?
- No. It’s read by your browser on your computer. The page is allowed to talk only to the licence server and a cookie-free page counter, and neither receives anything from your statement.
- What if a row doesn’t agree with the balance?
- It’s flagged in red with a cross, and marked in the CSV. Check it against the PDF: usually a page is missing from the file or a figure was misread. The report button tells us the bank (and nothing else) so the layout can be fixed.
- How much does it cost?
- Three statements a day are free. Pro is £8 a month or £69 a year for as many as you like.
